Launch Your Career as a Certified Music Educator

Pursue a career as an innovative music educator. In this master of arts program, you will take a wide range of courses in applied music, theory, and pedagogy, learning specialized and contemporary approaches to teaching music. During your course of study, you must complete one semester of fieldwork and two semesters of supervised student teaching at NYU-affiliated New York City schools.

This program leads to eligibility for New York State initial teaching certification as a teacher of music in all grades (K-12). 

A non-certification degree in Music Education is also available, as well as a post-master's advanced certificate

How You'll Learn

Music Pedagogy and Content
The curriculum for this graduate degree combines intensive study in music education, pedagogy, and content with performance opportunities and electives in research and praxis. You will acquire musical knowledge and skills in the content of good pedagogical practice. 

Student Teaching in New York Schools and Community Settings
You'll gain valuable experience through completing two semesters of student teaching at New York City public and independent schools, under the close supervision of experienced music teachers.

Performance Opportunities
You'll have opportunities to participate in a variety of performing ensembles and chamber groups directed by leading New York artists. 

Dual Degree Option: BM Music Performance/MA Music Education

We also offer a dual degree that allows you to earn a bachelor of music in composition or performance and a master of arts in music education in only five years. You can take courses towards your graduate degree during your junior and senior years, then complete the MA in one additional year of study, becoming eligible for New York State initial certification as a teacher of music, grades K-12. Advanced Certificate Program: Professional Studies in Music

Through our post-master's advanced certificate you will be able to take advanced classes in music education and elective courses in music performance, composition, music technology, music business, or any other program in the Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions.

This advanced certificate program, which takes 18-24 credits to complete, will allow you to combine intensive study in music education and pedagogy with performance opportunities or private study in instrumental performance.
