Doctoral Studies in Drama Therapy

Doctoral Studies in Drama Therapy

Develop Research Skills and Focus Your Studies on Drama Therapy

Deepen your understanding of drama therapy and become a competent researcher in the field. There are three options for doctoral study in drama therapy at NYU.

PhD in Educational Theatre

Through a broadly designed and individualized curriculum, students in the PhD in Educational Theatre will develop their artistic praxis needed to transform today’s learning communities in a variety of educational, cultural, and vocational contexts. The PhD program provides comprehensive research and artistic training that equips graduates with the knowledge and skills to have a significant impact on scholarship in educational theatre. General degree requirements include foundations in education, cognate study (that is, elective coursework related to and supportive of the area of specialization, but from outside of the program), research electives, and coursework in a specialized research methodology. Acceptance into doctoral study is competitive as we offer a funding program for full-time PhD students that supports tuition and living expenses. Applicants may also apply for part-time study which is not funded, though this is no less competitive than the full-time program. See curriculum and requirements for this degree.

EdD in Educational Theatre

Through a broadly designed and individualized curriculum, students in the Ed.D. in Educational Theatre will develop their artistic praxis and the leadership skills needed to transform today’s learning communities in a variety of educational, cultural, and vocational contexts. Applications for the EdD in Educational Theatre are accepted from candidates with demonstrated interest in practice-based research. A satisfactorily completed master’s degree is expected prior to application along with a portfolio of work demonstrating arts-based research, professional arts experience, and leadership in the field. See curriculum and requirements for this degree.

PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences

The Rehabilitation Science doctoral degree program offers opportunities to pursue quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods research. It is designed for students with interests in multi-disciplinary collaboration (such as with speech therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, etc.). Credentialed drama therapists are eligible to apply for a scholarship to this program that covers tuition and includes a stipend for living expenses. The program can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis, but only full-time students are eligible for scholarship support. See the curriculum and requirements for this degree.
