Private Composition Lessons
Students take private instruction in composition for the 8 semesters of their study with our faculty. As a student, you are free to choose a faculty member from the Screen Scoring, Concert Music, or Songwriting programs. You will decide your private instructor with your advisor, who will carefully help you to design a plan for your studies.

Orchestration Sequence
We offer you one of the most robust orchestration curricula. You are required to take 4 orchestration courses in the following order: Percussion Practicum, Orchestration I, Orchestration II, Advanced Orchestration: Screen Scoring. In addition, you might take Advanced Orchestration: Concert Music as an elective to master even further orchestration.

Junior Experience
In their junior year, students take a class called the Junior Experience. In this class, junior students work together to organize a concert marathon that will showcase their music written for any medium.

Capstone
In their senior year, students will decide on a Capstone project. The Capstone should synthesize some of their learning during their degree and it should help them to prepare for their goals after graduation. Capstones might include scoring of a significant project, a concert, a research project, or the development of a product or service, amongst other options.

8 semesters of a combination of MPATC-UE 1050 and MPATC-UE 1424 by advisement (1 credit per course per semester)

Unrestricted Electives

16 Credits

We encourage our students to design a significant part of their curriculum in their elective credit. Students might decide to take more courses in music, including more courses in composition, songwriting, and scoring. Students are also encouraged to consider courses in Film, Documentary, Video Games, or Business, but they are also free to choose any number of minors offered by the University. Some popular minors include BEMT, Cinema Studies, Game Design, Film, Computer Science, Documentary.

This is only a small subset of classes you can take as electives from the Department. There are many others throughout the Department and across the university that are available.
