NYU Steinhardt's graduate programs in educational theatre share a unique emphasis on applied theatre as a tool to enhance learning. Students in our certification programs are prepared to teach theatre in public and private schools; non-certification students are prepared to work in nontraditional settings such as youth centers, theatres, communities, and prisons.

Programs of Study

Coursework balances academic rigor with practical learning. Students build theoretical and pedagogical frameworks in theatre criticism, aesthetics, and research classes; production and performance courses enable students to acquire and enhance technical skills in acting, directing, and set and costume design.

The program's strong emphasis on social justice and diversity is reflected in community outreach initiatives. Faculty and students of the program engage with young and adult urban audiences through experimental plays and accompanying workshops produced year-round in the Provincetown Playhouse, the Black Box Studio, and other community studio spaces.

Students benefit from the program's strong connections to New York City's theatre and performing arts world, pursuing guided fieldwork experiences in professional theatres, schools, hospitals, media networks, recreational and community centers, and social service agencies.

Our faculty, recognized as leaders in the field of arts education, encourage you to give full expression to your talents inside the classroom and out.

You will graduate from NYU Steinhardt with the technical skills, experience, and network of support you need to succeed as an arts educator.

Broaden Your Learning Through Global Study

Graduate and upper-level undergraduate students have the opportunity to gain exposure to theatre-in-education practices through specialized coursework in Dublin, London, and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Financial Aid

Each year, we award $6 million in tuition scholarships to master’s students, which are determined by merit and financial need. These scholarships, combined with loans and student employment, help both full- and part-time students afford the cost of a graduate education. Applicants who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and who complete their Free Application for Student Aid on time will be considered for financial aid.

Full-time PhD applicants who submit completed applications for admission by the deadline will automatically be considered for our complete funding and mentoring program, which includes full tuition and a stipend.
