NYU Steinhardt's BM, MM, Advanced Certificate, and PhD programs in Instrumental Performance develop your technique and artistry, preparing you for a professional career in ensemble, collaborative, and solo performance.

All Programs Feature:

  • Private instruction on your instrument. Strings faculty include: violinists Cyrus Beroukhim, Stephanie Chase, Gregory Fulkerson, Laura Hamilton, Kikuei Ikeda, Shmuel Katz, Michelle Kim, Jennifer Koh, Anton Miller, Jesse Mills, Christiane Pors, Ann Setzer, and Naoko Tanaka; violists Stephanie Baer, Shmuel Katz, Anne Lanzilotti, and Karen Ritscher; cellists Edwin Arron, Marion Feldman, Eric Jacobsen, and Eileen Moon, bassist Joseph Bongiorno; and harpist Bridget Kibbey.
  • Opportunities to perform in outstanding ensembles from the traditional to the avant-garde including string, brass, and woodwind chamber music ensembles; a chamber symphony; two symphony orchestras; concert wind ensemble; new music and dance ensemble; percussion ensembles; and Composers Ensemble. Several mainstage and workshop music theatre and opera productions are presented each year, often reviewed by the New York media
  • Access to electives in areas including music education, composition, music technology, and music business

Career Opportunities

Graduates of our instrumental programs perform in major symphony orchestras and noted chamber groups, perform internationally as solo recitalists and chamber musicians, manage their own ensembles, and play in Broadway show orchestras as well as opera and ballet orchestras.
