2016: Arts Education Down Under

Location: Sydney and Melbourne, Austrlia

Dates: July 22 - August 3, 2016

Educators will visit schools and cultural sites to learn from the innovations and experiences of leading Australian arts educators in their new approaches to art education and social justice. This is an opportunity for Fellows to see schools in a new cultural setting, to network with each other, and to get to know NYU Steinhardt faculty in an experiential and professional context.

Selected candidates will participate in pre- and post-travel activities in New York City in addition to the International Study Trip. Additional details will be shared upon acceptance.

Selection Criteria

In order to be eligible to apply for this opportunity, you must:

Please note: This opportunity is intended to build a community of best practices for teachers of a specific subject area each year. School staff other than full-time classroom teachers (i.e. substitute teachers, administrators, counselors, principals, etc.) are not eligible to apply.

Each applicant must demonstrate in the personal statement how participating in the program will enhance his/her practice as teachers.  For the summer 2016 theme, "Arts Education Down Under," educators of art, music, and drama are particularly encouraged to apply.

The Astor Fellows Selection Committee, composed of NYU Steinhardt faculty and staff, will review all applications and identify finalists based on:

  1. Achievements of the teacher, and statement of purpose essay, as described in the online teacher application form. We seek a good fit between participants and the academic theme.  Applicants should use the essay question to explain this connection.
  2. An online recommendation form from a school leader (e.g. principal, headmaster, parent organization president, etc.) who is familiar with the candidates' teaching and contributions to the school.

Application Deadline: January 15, 2016

NYU Steinhardt will arrange single accommodation at three- or four-star hotels.
