The Research Alliance is excited to convene a discussion of factors outside the classroom that shape students’ educational trajectories, and the importance of collaboration in creating robust pathways to success.

We want you to be a part of this conversation!

Schools do not operate in a vacuum. There is a constellation of conditions and experiences that impact how students learn and what they achieve. Together with our partners, we will highlight two promising initiatives and examine how the varied systems that touch students’ lives might work together more effectively, more efficiently, and more innovatively.

The event will feature remarks from NYC Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos, Research Alliance Executive Director Cheri Fancsali, UC Irvine Professor Richard Arum, and other thought leaders, as well as a panel with representatives of the CUNY CARES and Every Child and Family is Known initiatives. The conversation will address challenges, opportunities, and new directions for both policy and research.

Following the main event, we will celebrate James Kemple, the founding executive director of the Research Alliance, with light refreshments and a toast to his accomplishments.

Homelessness in NYC Elementary Schools

Our study examines the experiences of homeless elementary students in New York City, and illuminates important findings about this vulnerable group of children. We also highlight educator perspectives on the challenges associated with serving large numbers of homeless students, as well as practices to improve students’ educational experiences.

Policing and Educational Outcomes

This study uses data on more than 230,000 NYC students to examine the effects of neighborhood policing on high school graduation rates. The findings highlight starkly different experiences with policing across racial/ethnic groups and provide evidence about how these inequities shape students' educational trajectories.
