What is the difference between the Education Studies program and other programs offered in the Department of Teaching and Learning?

As an Education Studies major, you will have the opportunity to study both urban and international contexts of contemporary education. You will examine important issues in teaching and learning such as achievement gaps, education as a human right, the role of technology in the classroom, charter schools, and educational quality in developing countries. Through liberal arts core courses, study abroad opportunities, and internships, you will gain hands-on experience in urban and global education, and will be prepared to work in a variety of organizations that focus on education. This is not a teacher certification program.

After graduating from our program, you will be prepared to work in fields such as education policy, research, fundraising, advocacy, and international development, and will also have the foundations and skills necessary to pursue graduate education. You may pursue a career in teaching by joining an organization like Teach for America, or by enrolling in a graduate program that offers teacher certification.

On the other hand, NYU’s Teacher Education programs prepare students to become classroom teachers. In these programs, you will gain content knowledge of a particular curricular area, such as science education or literacy. Learn more about programs offered by Steinhardt's Department of Teaching and Learning.

What is required for admission to the program?
