Nirit Gordon

Nirit Gordon is a doctoral candidate in Counseling Psychology at New York University, under the mentorship of Dr. Shabnam Javdani.

Nirit specializes in the study and treatment of gender based oppression with a focus on trauma, sexuality, objectification, women’s violence and social activism. She has published, journal articles, encyclopedia chapters and book chapters, and has presented at international conferences. Working with Dr. Javdani, Nirit is involved in the development, implementation, and evaluation of Skills for Life, an intervention for juvenile justice involved youth, informed by Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Sociopolitical Development, and Trauma Informed Care. Nirit’s dissertation focuses on fostering resistance to oppression and the relationship between critical consciousness and mental health outcomes in incarcerated youth.

As a clinician, Nirit has worked in multiple settings in Israel as well as New York City, treating adults and adolescents. Nirit’s clinical placements include: City College Counseling Center, St. Luke’s Trauma-Focused Program-Women’s Health Project, and the National Institute of the Psychotherapies. Additionally, Nirit is an adjunct instructor at New York University in the department of applied psychology, teaching both M.A. and undergraduate courses, including: Educational Psychology, Women and Mental Health, Individual Counseling Skills, Professional Orientation and Ethical Issues in Counseling.

Originally from Israel, Nirit received her B.A. in social work from Tel Hai College in Israel with a specialization in the treatment of trauma and post-trauma. She received her M.A. from the Transdisciplinary Violence and Trauma Studies Program at New York University, and will be serving as an Intern in the Integrative Trauma program at the National Institute of the Psychotherapies. Nirit is the recipient of The Monroe Stein Memorial Fellowship, NYU Steinhardt Ph.D. Fellowship and Scholarship, and The Felix M. Warburg Award Scholarship for Academic Excellence, among other awards.
