Jen Steiner Tonks: Adjunct Instructor


Jen TolkJen Steiner Tonks is a passionate and experienced educator, researcher, and learning technologist. She has ten years experience using design thinking collaboratively to create innovative solutions. Jen has worked on products and services for K-12 students, undergraduates, teachers, educational researchers, scientists, and translators. Situated at the intersection of learning theory, technology design, progressive education, teacher education, user experience, and social science research, Jen’s work focuses on making the complex acts of teaching and learning more visible. She approaches this work through user-centered and design-based implementation research.

Jen’s research interests include: tools and interfaces that support teachers as they improve their own practice, online communities of practice, alternative forms of assessment, video annotation tools, and user-generated data.

She has worked at the University of Michigan and held leadership positions at early stage educational technology startups. She has also consulted for large school districts. Jen is a former elementary teacher who taught in some of East Harlem’s progressive public schools. She also taught within the University of Michigan’s teacher education department for five years.

Jen holds a Bachelor’s Degree and Masters in the Art of Teaching from Sarah Lawrence College. She has a Doctorate in Educational Studies (Learning Technology) from the University of Michigan.

She is currently teaching at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development.
