The Teacher Environmental Education Preparation (TEEP) program was established in the fall of 1999 as a partnership between GrowNYCEnvironmental Education Advisory Council (EEAC) , and the Wallerstein Collaborative for Urban Environmental Education at New York University's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development . TEEP is a network of university faculty and environmental professionals working together to bring about increased opportunities for environmental education in pre-service teacher education.

Two major strategies for incorporation of Environmental Education (EE) in teacher preparation from the TEEP initiative. The first is to create a statewide center for EE, which would make EE a major focus of teacher preparation throughout the state. The second approach is to develop one or more innovations in the teacher certification structure to bring it in-line with New York State Standards.

Funding from the A'ina Fund for Environmental Education of the Tides Foundation enabled the partnership to convene three symposia in New York State to focus on environmental education for pre-service teachers. With additional support from Consolidated Edison Inc., TEEP hosted two more symposia in New York State. As a result, a network of university faculty and environmental educators are working together to bring about increased knowledge about programs and models of educational reform that support and improve the environmental literacy of future classroom teachers.
