Educator Application

The Hudson River Sloop
Clearwater has been providing students of the Hudson Valley with hands on environmental experiences sailing on the river for 40 years. Our sister ship, the Mystic Whaler sails with us from April to June providing an equally amazing educational adventure. Clearwater provides the crew of the Mystic Whaler with two fulltime live-aboard educators, interns and six volunteers to run our Classroom of the Waves programs.

Educators live aboard the schooner and lead two three-hour education programs with up to 50 passengers almost every day, designing innovative and exciting activities based on the interests of the students and ability of the volunteers. Educators also train interns and 6 new volunteers to help teach the learning stations aboard each week. (Stations cover topics such as navigation, fish, macro invertebrates, climate change, water chemistry and history).

Educators operate and maintain a trawl net, plankton tow and other sampling equipment. They also must coordinate program content between schools and the Clearwater office. This is a very challenging and exciting position outside on the water, teaching and inspiring the next generation of environmental leaders.

What does the Mystic Whaler Educator gain from this position?
Educators can expect to gain: teaching experience, knowledge of sailing, a greater familiarity with the issues and ecology of the Hudson River, some serious calluses, fantastic tales of adventure to share with friends, a $450.00 weekly stipend, room and board, and a lasting relationship with one of the most prestigious environmental education organizations in the Hudson Valley.
Educators get two days off for every five they work and are responsible for scheduling them with the other educator and interns. This is a full time position from the beginning of April until the Clearwater music festival at the end of June.
