Since 2006, the iLAB residency program has created opportunities for movement-based artists, scientists, environmentalists, architects and others to develop creative collaborative processes that engage ecologies in New York City. Other programs include an annual iLAND symposium that addresses issues of art and environment through a particular theme, on-going community and educational events, as well as the artistic projects of Artistic Director Jennifer Monson. These projects have included Flight of Mind, a phase of the navigational dance project BIRD BRAIN, iMAP /Ridgewood Reservoir Project, and the current Mahomet Aquifer Project, as well as several solos and other collaborative work.
iLAND is at a critical moment for growth and is in the process of creating more depth and breadth in our programming. The organization reaches across communities and has strong partnerships with foundations, government and community agencies. The Executive Director is expected to maintain existing relationships and to build new partnerships.
Working in conjunction with Artistic Director Jennifer Monson and our small but active Board, and with support from an Administrative Assistant, the Executive Director's responsibilities include:
Development
• Developing a strategic plan for fundraising and development.
• Grant writing.
• Grant research.
• Building an Individual giving program.
• Board development to bring in fiscal resources and science/environmental expertise.
• Building partnerships with local environmental organizations for potential funding resources.
Marketing
• Develop new environmentally-focused press materials.
• Expand on the potential web presence of the organization to create visibility for programs.
• Working with the Board to build relationships with science journalists.
• Leverage media coverage for wider visibility across communities.
Administration
• Oversight for Programs Associate and bookkeeper.
• Production and administrative support for Artistic Projects where needed.
Special Projects
iLAB residency program (in collaboration with Monson)
• Update database of applicants and create a database of potential partners and collaborators.
• Build relationships with interested NYC-based environmental organizations.
• Archive materials from the residencies for website, including video, audio, photos and ephemera.
Pre-Residency
• Organize information seminars and symposiums to bring together collaborators .
• Update and disseminate application.
• Be the point-person for the application procedure.
• Organize and schedule selection panel.
During Residency
• Facilitate meeting with collaborators.
• Prepare contracts and disburse payments.
• Follow up with mentoring process with Monson, other Board members and consultants. Send out reporting questions
• Update the web site
• Press and marketing for iLAB public events (press releases, e-flyers, etc.)
iLAND Symposium
Organizing and promoting an annual symposium in collaboration with Monson and the Board. This would include deciding a theme, selecting participants on creating an innovative structure for participation and dialogue, as well as publicity and outreach.
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
• An undergraduate degree or commensurate work experience and skills;
• Passion for and work experience in the area of environmental activism, research, science or policy;
• Truly excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to initiate and nurture relationships with a variety of people from different backgrounds and working in different fields, including but not limited to scientists, artists and advocacy groups.
• Proficiency with word processing computer software.
In addition, the following skills and/or experiences will be favored:
• Know-how of website and web networks;
• Arts administration or production knowledge.
Salary and time commitment: $25/hour, 10 hours per week. ($10,000 - $15,000/year)
