School Programs: Our School Programs compliment teachers' classroom lessons and engage students in the process of inquiry with educational programs that are aligned with recognized learning standards. All programs are carefully adapted for special needs.

v Tours - School students become critical thinkers by participating in engaging tours inspired by Wave Hill's expansive views of the river valley, the garden and woodland's trees extraordinary fall foliage, migrating birds and contemporary art.

v Theatre program - Students in grades K-3 actively participate in a fable about the Hudson River that brings educational content, singing and laughter together in a memorable way.

v Salamander Program - Middle school students come on six consecutive Saturdays to record Red-backed salamander activity in preparation for 8th grade Exit Projects.

v Professional development for classroom teachers - Classroom teachers discover opportunities to learn from nature and utilize content and methodologies with their students.

 

Role and Responsibilities: Wave Hill is looking for two interns who are interested in teaching environmental education. These interns should feel comfortable teaching science content outdoors through experiential tours and delivering theatre performances in front of large audiences. Interns assist in professional development for teachers' as needed. Other duties may be required, such as special internship projects.

 

Wave Hill will provide each intern with a stipend of $10 per hour. The workweek is a 20 hours, Tuesday-Friday from 8:30am -1:30pm. The internship lasts 16 weeks beginning in August/September and ending in November/December 2009. This stipend is being made available from a Kerlin endowment grant for students with a commitment to our programming and a sincere interest in Wave Hill. Interns report to the School Programs Manager and will work with a full-time educator in the training, preparation and delivery of these nature-based programs.

 

Requirements

· Graduate studies in a related field

· Previous experience with children and interest in natural sciences and arts

· Knowledge of inquiry-based teaching

· Bilingual with Spanish a plus
