We seek candidates with classroom experience to help middle school teachers create Integrated Ecology Curriculum: ecology-oriented projects woven into the regular school curriculum and centered on field-based or investigational activities. All projects must be interdisciplinary; the CS will work with all subject teachers not just science. The CS will not only develop curriculum and activities but will train and coach teachers in delivering the curriculum. You must be able to work independently with teachers in schools, be highly flexible and resourceful, and able to meet teachers needs and expectations. This is a FULL TIME TEMPORARY POSITION WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO PERMANENT. in the short term we need maternity coverage for our current curriculum specialist; but we are also expanding our program into new schools and so permanent hire is available after April 2010 if the temporary position goes well.
Additional Qualifications:
•Classroom K-12 teaching experience
• Ability to act as liaison with public school teachers, administrators, and students
• Experience in developing and implementing curriculum, and in guiding teachers in the
implementation and modification of curriculum as needed.
• Experience with project- and field-based curriculum and developing different types of assessments'.
• Experience and comfort working across disciplines on ecology related assignments for ELA, SS and Math classes in addition to Science class'
• Ability to interact effectively with University faculty, staff, students and external constituencies at national and international levels.
• Competent office skills and computer literacy (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint) necessary. Strong verbal communication skills necessary;
• Ability to understand teacher perspectives is critical.
• Professional demeanor and tact required.
• Ability to maintain busy training schedule independently
• Excellent work ethic and follow through, including reporting and documentation
Preferred Qualifications
• Commitment to conservation and environmental issues.
• Background or interest in science/ecology
• Experience with middle school students
• Public school experience
• Familiarity with NYC locations and resources
• Experience and/or enthusiasm using informal education locations and resources
• Willingness and ability to work with technology as a basis for activities or assessments
