AMNH, Urban Advantage Science Educator

The American Museum of Natural History is one of the premier science-rich cultural institutions in
New York City, offering tremendous resources to support student learning and teacher
professional development. The Museum has 45 exhibition halls, cutting-edge laboratories and
teaching facilities, one of the largest natural history libraries in the Western Hemisphere, and
state-of-the-art storage areas for collections of over 32 million specimens and artifacts. AMNH is
strategically positioned to develop new educational programs, form new partnerships, and launch
new initiatives while continuing successful ongoing activities.

AMNH is the lead institution of New York City's Urban Advantage Middle School Science Initiative
(UA), which is a standards-based partnership program designed to improve students'
understanding of scientific inquiry through collaborations between urban public school systems
and science cultural institutions. UA is in its 6th year and has grown to include over 30% of NYC
public middle schools.

Urban Advantage Science Educator
Responsibilities include:
• Designing and facilitating professional development workshops for UA teachers in
support of project-based, inquiry-based, middle school science instruction
• Partnering with a group of UA schools in Manhattan and serving as the main liaison
between UA and these schools
• Supporting implementation of the 8th grade science exit project and long-term science
investigations in grades 6 through 8 at partner schools
• Visiting science teachers and school administration at partnering schools and supporting
the alignment of UA with the schools' goals for science instruction
• Developing UA workshops for 6th grade teachers in the UA 6th grade pilot program
• Interacting with public middle schools and with the administrative hierarchies that govern
them, including the NYC Department of Education, and its regions and school districts
• Collaborating with other UA and Gottesman Center staff to design and implement
professional development programs
• Produce regular reports and maintain records and files on UA Initiative elements.
• Other duties as assigned by the Director of the Gottesman Center and the Urban
Advantage Program Director
• Schedule includes some weekends
Qualifications
• Masters Degree in Science or Science Education
• Minimum eight years experience in teaching science and/or developing and implementing
teacher professional development programs
• Demonstrated ability in implementing inquiry-based education
• Knowledge of NYC middle schools, particularly in the area of staff development and
classroom science instruction
• Knowledge of city, state, and national learning and performance standards in science
• Strong organizational and planning skills
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs that include PowerPoint, Word, Excel.
Knowledge of Oracle, Access, and MeetingMaker is an asset
• Excellent written and oral communication skills


The Urban Advantage Educator needs to have the ability to tolerate ambiguity and take initiative
to solve problems and propose solutions.
