City Parks Foundation (CPF) is the only independent, non-profit organization to offer park programs throughout the five boroughs of New York City. The Education Department, founded in 1993, presents a wide range of programs targeted to children, youth, and educators in a variety of settings, including parks, recreation centers, public schools, and other community organizations.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
CityParks Education offers experiential, inquiry-based programs for children, youth, adults and community members, including:
Learning Gardens - Educators teach a series of lessons to students (K-8th grade) in schools and outdoors in gardens. In the late spring/summer, this program delivers lessons, workshops and hosts events for the larger community.
Coastal Classroom (early fall, spring & summer) - raises environmental awareness and helps develops stewardship practices through water-based (marine or coastal ecology/aquatic animals, etc.) education, research projects, and survey participation.
Seeds to Trees - Seeds to Trees works with elementary and middle school students in the classroom and at specific park sites throughout the City.
CityParks Education provides ample opportunity for interns to experience and participate in science inquiry-based lesson planning, preparation, and program delivery. Programs are diverse and multi-faceted; school programs are aligned with the New York City scope and sequence. Interns will have ample opportunity to learn about effective teaching techniques, urban ecology, environmental science, museum and outdoor education, and the public school environment.
