How do other societies structure their schools? Is American education exceptional among nations? How do children in other cultures learn? What kind of education is necessary for success in this era of unprecedented globalization?
Educators today face questions that make cross-cultural and global perspectives critical to professional practice. Study abroad is one way to gain these important competencies and distinguish yourself in the profession.

Graduate Students
The Department of Teaching and Learning sponsors a number of summer study abroad programs for graduate students that provide professional development
Shanghai, China: Comparative Approaches to Multilingual Multicultural Education: This three-week study program offers educators an opportunity to examine the intercultural perspectives in teaching and learning in China and to explore the teaching of language, particularly English as a foreign language and Chinese, across all school levels.
London, UK: Literacy Teaching and Learning: Effective Schools for Cosmopolitan Democracies: This four-week study program in London and Oxford gives participants the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of language development and literacy learning as well as to develop a thorough understanding of the history and contemporary context of immigration as it impacts teaching and learning in schools. Included are instructional experiences in story telling, poetry, drama, historical inquiry, and art, alongside course work in oral language development, writing, and response to literature.
Brazil: Arts, Culture and Education: This three-week program in Porto Allegre, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador, Brazil, combines study of culture, education, history and politics with literature, film, music and the fine arts. Brazil, with its complex multiracial culture, its emphasis on carnival and the carnivalesque spirit, and its history of social and political activism in all aspects of community including education, provides an ideal setting for participants to explore the intricate relationship between a society and its arts and education.
