The Bilingual Education Program is inter-disciplinary in its approach to preparing educational personnel to function in linguistically different settings with a special focus on the global dimensions of immigrant education. The program emphasizes teacher preparation at the master's level along with research, educational technology, cultural awareness, language acquisition, and educational leadership. Students take a common core of foundation courses in language and language education and then are individually advised to take courses in related areas.
Master of Arts in Bilingual EducationThe Master of Arts program prepares teachers for bilingual settings at the early childhood, elementary, secondary, and post-secondary levels. We welcome applicants from a range of content areas and academic backgrounds. A copy of the curriculum for this 34-point program may be downloaded using Adobe Acrobat Reader or obtained from the program director. Sample course offerings include Bilingual Multicultural Education (E29.2001), Curriculum Adaptations to Bilingual Education (E29.2101), Teaching Second Languages: Theory and Practice (E29.2002), and Intercultural Perspectives in Multilingual Multicultural Education (E29.2005). Students must also demonstrate proficiency in English and another language.

Beyond the Master's Program
The Post M.A. Advanced Certificate in Bilingual Education is a 30-point program for bilingual teachers, supervisors, teacher trainers, administrators, and materials developers who wish to continue their education beyond the Masters level. It is appropriate for those who wish to continue their study of Bilingual Education or add to their teaching and learning experience. The Post-MA Advanced Certificate can also serve as a bridge between Masters and Doctoral study. For more information, email Dr. Miriam Eisenstein Ebsworth at mee1@nyu.edu.
Financial Aid Opportunities
Students in bilingual education may apply through the program for the following grants or scholarships: special education for speakers of Asian languages, teacher training of educational personnel for Latino students, Spanish bilingual special education, graduate training for Asian bilingual special education teachers, ITIBE and Title VII funds when available.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of our programs are in great demand as teachers, program coordinators, curriculum specialists, and evaluators in elementary and secondary schools, community colleges, and universities throughout the New York metropolitan area, across the country, and worldwide. As immigration increases, more people are seeking to broaden their skills through language learning and cultural awareness. Opportunities are rapidly growing in many non-school settings as well, such as community associations, immigrant resettlement agencies, publishing, training programs for multinational corporations, and international agencies both here and abroad.
