Science Education Minor

The Science Education Minor enables you to complete coursework as an undergraduate in CAS that will reduce the number of credits required of an NYU Steinhardt M.A. degree in Teachers of Science, Grades 7-12 that will fulfill the requirements for Initial teacher certification. The master's degree will require 30 credits including student teaching internships beyond the bachelor's degree.

Ideally you would want to declare the minor and begin taking these courses during your first semester of junior year. Please be advised that most of these courses require a fieldwork component consisting of classroom observation and participation. Courses to be taken by CAS Biology, Chemistry or Physics Majors as a minor in Science Education (5 Courses, 18 Points)

Prerequisite
An overall GPA during the first two years of study of at least 2.5 and an overall GPA in science content courses during the first two years of at least 3.0.
Fall Semester Junior Year (1 course, 4 points)
TCHL-UE 0001 Inquiries into Teaching and Learning I. Includes 15 hours of field experience.
Spring Semester Junior Year (2 course, 8 points)

Inquiries into Teaching and Learning II. Includes 15 hours field experiences.
TCHL-UE 1030 Language Acquisition and Literacy. Includes 15 hours of field experience.
Fall Semester Senior Year (1 course, 3 points)
SCIED-UE 1039 Methods 1: Teaching of Science in Middle School and High School. Includes 15 hours of field experience.
Spring Semester Senior Year (1 course, 3 points)
SCIED-UE 1050 Using NYC Non-Formal Science Resources to teach Science

Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for one of Steinhardt's MA programs in teacher education, you must have completed your Science Education Minor courses with a grade of B or better and present a strong academic record in your other courses.

Applications should be submitted for the fall semester by the deadline of February 1. Be sure to indicate the option code of “FYR” on your graduate admissions application if you will have completed an Ed Minor by the time you enroll in the master's.
