Dual Certification: MA in Foreign Language Education (7-12) and TESOL, All Grades (Pre K-12)

Students seeking a Dual Certificate: MA in Foreign Language Education (7-12) and TESOL, All Grades (Pre K-12) must complete 50 units of course work. Courses include foundations in linguistics, target language, methods, culture, second language research, structure of American English, and student teaching placement. Students may also take Teaching Foreign Languages to Elementary School Children FLGED-GE 2018 to extend their foreign language certification to K-6.

FLGED-GE. 2018 Teaching Foreign Languages to Elementary School Students

INITIAL NY STATE TEACHER CERTIFICATION
: This program leads to eligibility for the New York State foreign language initial teaching certificate. All students must pass the following examinations before graduation in order to be eligible for teaching certification: 

  • Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST)
  • Assessment of Teaching Skills Written (Secondary ATS-W)
  • Content Specialty Test in Target Language (CST)
  • Content Specialty Test in ESOL (CST)

OTHER STATE REQUIREMENTS FOR FL/ESOL CERTIFICATION:

  • 30 units of study of the target language at college level or officially recognized equivalent (FL)
  • 9 units in liberal arts courses: 3 in Mathematics, 3 in science, and 3 in social studies (TESOL)
  • 12 units in the study of a language other than English (TESOL)

English Proficiency Requirements for International Students: All International students from non-English-speaking countries must be tested at American Language Institute prior to matriculation to the major program. Based on the test results, one may be exempt from English courses or required to take the following: 

__ SESL1-CE.9000- Levels 1-4 Intensive Course at ALI (full-time ALI, no major courses)
__ SESL1-CE.9006- Levels 5-6 Comprehensive Course (part-time ALI plus 1-2 major courses)
__ SESL1-CE.9174- Level 7 Reading/Writing Workshop I (all international students must pass this course; part-time Steinhardt: 2-3 major courses)
__ SESL1-CE.9184 Advanced Workshop in College English (Optional)
__ Exempt from ALI course work (tested out/BA from an English-speaking university, etc.)
