The more than 100 full- and part-time faculty who are members of our Department are deeply committed to both research and practice in teacher education. Our work is varied, collaborative, and dynamic, and we find ways to engage students wherever possible in our work.
Together our faculty teach hundreds of students each year from within our department and throughout the University who are interested in learning about theory and practice in education. We undertake and publish our research on a wide array of topics, ranging from mathematical modeling as a teaching approach, gender and race in science education, and referrals to special education to school reform in large cities, language and literacy, and immigrant children in public schools. Our field projects take us into the Lower East Side for an after school program in mathematics, into high schools where we mentor students into teaching careers, into elementary schools where students help young children develop literacy skills, and into middle schools where we help teachers learn second language acquisition methods to better communicate with the immigrant students and families in their classrooms. Many faculty serve on the editorial boards of scholarly journals, including Educational Researcher, Education Today, Comparative Education Review, and Journal of Language Minority Issues, to name just a few. Collectively we have won dozens of awards and make dozens of presentations and keynote addresses throughout the year at conferences, institutes and professional meetings across the country, eager to share with our colleagues our discoveries and experiences in education.
