Dual BA Physics/MA Teaching Physics, grades 7-12
This accelerated dual degree program enables you to complete both your BA in Physics and your MA in Teaching Physics, grades 7-12 in five years. When you complete the dual degree program, you will be eligible for New York State certification as a teacher of Physics for grades 7-12. Because of reciprocity agreements with other states, those certified by New York State are able to teach in most other U.S. states.
Overview
The Master’s Program in Teaching Physics, grades 7-12, is designed to immerse aspiring teachers in the theory and practice of teaching Physics to middle and high school students. The program focuses on strategies for teaching science to urban students and provides an excellent opportunity for involving teachers in techniques for increasing participation in science by women and minorities.
The pivotal experience of the program consists of two semesters of student teaching, one at the middle and one at the high school level. M.A. students, mentored by their cooperating teachers, NYU field supervisors and methods teachers, are given responsibility for teaching in New York City public schools. Extensive school-based fieldwork (100 hours) is required prior to student teaching, which you will complete, in part, during your junior or senior year.
Eligibility and Requirements for the BA Physics/MA Teaching Physics, grades 7-12 Program
CAS students majoring in Physics are eligible for this dual degree program. Students complete 9 credits of the 39 credits for the MA while they are still undergraduates. These 9 credits are specified below.
Students must earn a B or better in all Steinhardt courses in order for these to be applied to the MA. Dual degree students must complete all requirements of their major as well as College-wide requirements prior to matriculating at Steinhardt.

Steinhardt Graduate Courses to be Completed During Junior or Senior Year
During their junior or senior year, CAS Physics Majors complete 9 credits in Teaching Physics in place of other electives. These 9 credits count toward the BA degree in Physics from CAS.
