Doctoral Seminars
The Doctoral Seminars in the Department of Teaching and Learning are open to doctoral students enrolled in any department or program at New York University. They are designed for small, conversation-size enrollments. Under the direction of one or more professors, seminar participants read rich texts, engage in deep conversation, and work on a paper or project designed to help the student gain a scholarly voice, reflect on issues of importance, and define a dissertation focus.
Departmental doctoral seminars are offered on a rotating basis and include:

Doctoral Seminar in Curriculum and Instruction: a focus on the nature of teaching, learning, and curriculum with an emphasis or urban education in a global context.

Doctoral Seminar in Reading and Teaching Literature: Examines theory and research in the teaching of literature. Enables students to explore their own concerns regarding how individuals and groups read and interpret literature.

Doctoral Dissertation Proposal Seminar: limited to doctoral students in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development who have achieved candicacy and have completed at least one course in research methodology. For students who have identifid an area of study.

Doctoral Seminar in Educational Linguistics: Investigates issues and research in the application of linguistic theory to educational problems. Distinguishes between traditional (commonsense) and progessive (uncommonsense) approaches to such issues as gender, language and learning, and literacy as a sociocultural phenomenon.
