DCLT Monthly Forum on Teaching Chinese, May 16, 2008
DCLT's final Monthly Forum for this school year was held on Friday, May 16, 2008. The topic was "Technology and Activities for Teaching Vocabulary and Characters." More than 25 teachers and prospective teachers attended the forum and shared activities for our "Swap Shop." Enjoy pictures of the event.
DCLT Second Monthly Forum on Teaching Chinese, April 11th, 2008
DCLT's second Monthly Forum on Teaching Chinese was attended by more than 28 in-service and pre-service teachers. The topic, "Curriculum Planning, Textbooks, and Lesson Planning," was illuminating and of great use to attendees. Five current Chinese Language Teachers shared details about the textbooks they use in daily teaching, pros and cons of the textbooks, and how they design lesson plans to complement the chosen texts. Project DCLT's first Monthly Forum for Teachers of Chinese, March 14, 2008
Our first monthly forum was attended by about 22 teachers and students, and focused on "Classroom Management and Motivating Students." Frank Tang, Director of Project DLCT, presented on Classroom Management, while Joyce Ranieri, Head Chinese Teacher at The Spence School, discussed motivational strategies and creating engaging lesson plans. Dalton School's Professional Development Day, February 19, 2008
DCLT Director Frank Tang made a presentation on "Brain-Based Teaching of Foreign Languages" at The Dalton School's Professional Development Day on February 19, 2008. The Dalton School has an existing Chinese program which is expanding and has shown interest in accepting NYU students to observe and student teach their Chinese classes.
Welcoming the Year of the Rat, February 7th, 2008
On February 7, 2008, four ECNU exchange graduate students currently enrolled in the Teaching Chinese Master's Program at NYU joined DCLT staff for a luncheon to celebrate the Year of the Rat. View pictures.
NYC City-Wide LOTE Conference, January 29th, 2008
DCLT members Frank Tang and Robin Harvey presented on "Task- and Project-Based Learning" at the recent NYC City-Wide LOTE Conference, "The World Languages Symposium" on January 29, 2008. Approximately 30 teachers of Chinese, French, Italian, and Spanish attended the presentation. Dr. Tang spoke on the theory behind task- and project-based learning, while Robin Harvey engaged the group in several task-based learning activities in teaching Mandarin to American students. The presentation received a very positive evaluation from participants. View pictures.
DCLT Roundtable on Teaching Chinese, December 15th, 2007
DCLT's first Roundtable on Teaching Chinese for New and Prospective Teachers was on December 15, 2007. It was attended by 12 in-service and 15 prospective teachers. Dezeng Pang, veteran Chinese teacher at Bronx Lab School, and Pat Lo, Director of the New York ALBETAC, made presentations and sparked a lively discussion. View pictures.
