Developing Chinese Language Teachers

Projects From Haiwen Lu

My name is Haiwen Lu. I teach at Our World Neighborhood Charter School. We just started the Mandarin program in 6th grade this year. The class hours are pretty limited. We only meet twice a week and 50 minutes per time. This project was about the "Mid-Autumn Festival", and the students did the project in early October, which was their second month learning Mandarin. They were given the story, cultural background, and some key words of the mid-autumn festival. They were asked to write a story, draw a picture and write "Happy Mid-Autumn Festival" in either Pinyin or Chinese characters. The culture is the priority in the project. The students had great fun in doing the project, and realized the importance of different cultures.
