Teaching Content Areas to ELLs

The Petrie Partnership for Teacher Excellence Curriculum Development Project

The six modules are designed to: 1) enhance the awareness of pre-service and in-service teachers about the needs and characteristics of English Language Learners (ELLs) and 2) educate pre-service and in-service teachers about how to teach math, science, social studies, and ESL to ELLs. The focus of the project is the effective teaching of content and the English language to ELLs in NYC public schools.

The project was directed by Dr. Frank Tang, Co-Director of Multilingual Multicultural Studies (MMS) and coordinated by Dr. Joanna Labov, Clinical Assistant Professor in TESOL. (See Appendix 1 for the project team membership list and Appendix 2 for the ELL Think Tank members who contributed to the project by providing invaluable feedback.)

The Petrie Partnership for Teacher Excellence funded the completion of this project.
