Communicative Sciences and Disorders
Location: Lund, Sweden
Dates: May 26 - June 29, 2013 (ADMISSIONS ARE CLOSED FOR 2013)
The Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders offers post baccalaureate and master’s level students in speech-language pathology as well as post-master’s speech-language pathologists an opportunity to earn 6 graduate points or 60 New York State continuing education units while living and studying in Sweden. Sweden is a country known for its state-of-the-art approaches to speech science and speech-disorder remediation. Housed in the Department of Logopedics and Phoniatrics of Lund University in Lund, Sweden, the program combines lectures with directed enrichment activities. Founded in 1666, Lund University— the largest and most comprehensive university in Sweden—is a major international institution located in a small city over 1,000 years old. Home to over 37,000 students throughout the academic year and into early summer, this historic city is filled with student cafés, bookstores, museums, and parks, all within walking distance of the university center.
The Department of Logopedics and Phoniatrics, located within the university’s medical school, provides an ideal setting for the academic program’s focus on learning to evaluate research and to diagnose and treat motor speech disorders. With this summer’s emphasis on neurologically caused speech-language disorders, the program uses the available expertise of Lund University neurologists, otolaryngologists, radiologists, and speech pathologists to create a setting in which course content and diagnostic and remediation procedures are tightly integrated. In addition, guest lecturers from locations such as Malmö Hospital, Carolinska Institute in Stockholm, or Gotenberg University address the group. Students also learn about current research projects in an international environment that supports both basic as well as applied research.
All participants must take both courses offered in the program and participate in required field trips to hospitals or rehabilitation centers. Each course meets for six hours per week for five weeks, leaving Fridays free for field trips and enrichment activities.
