Offered by the Department of Teaching and Learning, this three-week study abroad program provides educators and graduate students with an opportunity to examine the intercultural perspectives on teaching and learning in China and to explore the teaching of foreign languages, particularly English as a foreign language, across all school levels. The focus for the NYU Shanghai summer program is “teaching and learning in the East and the West.” The program is designed for graduate students, teachers, and curriculum specialists in TESOL, bilingual education, foreign language education, English education, social studies, humanities, and international education.
Students spend three weeks in Shanghai. Teaching and learning activities include classes and seminars taught by NYU faculty members and lectures by faculty members from local higher education institutions such as Shanghai Normal University. Students also have the opportunity to visit local colleges and public and private schools in Shanghai. Participants are able to mingle and dialogue with Chinese teachers and students. Teaching internships in Shanghai may be arranged for interested students.

Courses
This program is a series of integrated learning experiences; the themes explored cut across the courses listed below. The program begins with an in-person academic orientation in New York City. Thereafter, students travel to Shanghai, China, where special guest lectures and seminars led by renowned scholars in Asia supplement our classes at Shanghai Normal University.

Graduate students are encouraged to apply for this program. Qualified upper-level undergraduates (seniors with 96+ earned credits only) with related course work may be considered and will require approval from the faculty director as well as their advisor.

Accommodations
Students are housed in a residence hall on the campus of Shanghai Normal University.
Field Trips
Educational field trips to various public and private universities and schools are planned. Students have ample time to conduct their field research in the Greater Shanghai area, as well as cultural trips in and outside of Shanghai, such as Nanjing, Beijing, Xi’an, Soozhou, Hangzhou, Hong Kong, and other locations.

2010 Graduate tuition: $1203 per point, plus registration fees
2008 Program and activities fee: $675
2008 Accommodations fee: $900
2008 Travel: approximately $1,250 for round-trip airfare to China. Students make reservations individually.
