Academics
This three-week immersion program is offered as an alternative to the conventional classroom experience and will present students with the opportunity to explore cultural institutions of Prague and the Czech Republic, and to work directly with noted Czech artists in the studios of Artmill (www.artmill.eu). The session will end with an exhibition of students and Czech artists work at a large NYU exhibition space in the center of Prague.
The first part of the session (5 days) will take place in Prague. Students will participate in a series of lectures focused on Czech art, criticism and theory, politics, society, and contemporary culture; to be interspersed and combined with excursions to artist studios, national and artist-organized cultural institutions, art residency programs, arts academies and independent galleries. Presenters include NYU-Prague affiliated faculty as well as distinguished Czech historians, artists, museum curators and directors.
From Prague, students will travel to Artmill--located two-and-a-half hours to the south in the forested countryside of Southern Bohemia. The workshops (12 days) at ArtMill are held in a stimulating natural environment; led by leading Czech artists familiar with Central European traditions of alternative exhibiting practices. During this time students will work in their chosen media with invited Czech artists including painters, sculptors, photographers, installation and multi-media artists (including video and sound). This intensive learning session is based on the guild models of the Renaissance. During the studio session students will also participate in guided excursions to national and local museums, castles, and galleries. Students will experience local culture and community interaction within this unique region while living near ArtMill. The site visits will promote exploration of Czech culture to inspire students' artistic development.
Upon completion of the studio work session, students will return to Prague (4 days). During this time we will continue with studio visits and lectures as well as plan and install the exhibition. Students will prepare for a traditional Vernissage (Opening) to include Czech music and food. Among the invited guests will be regional journalists and noted figures in the cultural community of Prague.
By participating in this immersion course, students will develop historical and critical perspectives about their chosen subject, while gaining awareness of the Central European contemporary artistic practice. Students will have the opportunity to meet with independent curators and museum directors, and establish relationships with these professionals as well as the Czech artists working closely with them at Artmill.
Graduate students earn 3 or 6 Credits.
Undergraduates earn 4 or 6 Credits.

Qualified students from other Universities are encouraged to apply. Please refer to the directions for "Non-NYU Students for Summer Abroad" on the "How To Apply" page.
This program is open to all students interested in creativity: both art and non-art majors. Artmill is an artistic community dedicated to inspiring students to open themselves to new ways of thinking, learning, and seeing the world based on a sustainable model. Part of the program includes visits to residency programs and cultural institutions, valuable study models for students of Arts Administration and Visual Culture Studies.
At Artmill, students will be encouraged to explore new media and work with materials that may be outside the realm of traditional art programs. We encourage students majoring in any discipline that requires creative thinking to apply. Besides drawing, painting, mixed media sculpture, installation, video, photography (wet darkroom and digital), new media, architecture and design, students may select art practices such as textiles, ceramics, glass, costume design, blacksmithing, and electronics in art. We can offer study in the areas of theatre and music for interested applicants.
