Course Description

In conjunction with the Department of Communication at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), this 2008 summer study abroad program focuses on a cross-national comparison of current trends in media and globalization. Through an intensive series of lectures, discussions, and seminars, participants explore the dynamics of contemporary media practices and uses, with a special emphasis on trends in new media and associated changes in business strategies and legal frameworks.

This exchange brings together students from NYU and UvA to analyze and compare media practices in Europe and the United States under the guidance and direction of faculty from both NYU and UvA.

Amsterdam Program FAQ

Do I need to speak another language to take this course?
Language is not a problem when traveling or studying in Amsterdam. UvA classes are held in English and most all Dutch speak English fluently. It is a very comfortable environment in which to study comparative cultures and begin or continue one’s travels in Europe. In Paris, we will be joined by faculty from the American University of Paris, where the teaching is done in English.

How much does the course cost?
There are two basic costs:
  • Tuition & Registration: the per-point summer tuition costs ($1,097/point)
  • Course Fee: $1,900
The course fee covers all lodging abroad (breakfast included) at the Le Coin Hotel in Amsterdam, accommodation in Paris, field trip transportation, including travel to Paris, and admission fees and site visits that are part of the official schedule. It does not include airfare.

Can I get financial aid for the course?
Financial aid is available for students taking the course for six points or taking six credits cumulatively over the summer.

How many points do I take the course for?
Graduate students register for six points. Undergraduates may register for either 4 or 6 units depending on their curricular needs and also their financial aid situation.

What if I register for six units? Does it increase my workload? (Undergraduates only)
Registering for six points does not increase your workload.

What kind of assignments does the course require?
Most of the coursework will be done in groups comprised of students from NYU and the University of Amsterdam. Smaller assignments designed to acquaint you with research strategies and sources for these assignments will also be required as well as a short mid-term essay.

Is housing available during the New York part of the course?
Summer housing is available in one of NYU’s residence halls for the NYU portion of the course. Arrangements for this housing can be made through the Study Abroad Office. If you are currently in residence, you can also arrange with residence life to extend your stay in your current location. What requirements does this course fulfill? This course fulfills “Globalization” field of study for both the undergraduate and graduate programs of study.

What do I need to pay for while in Amsterdam and Paris?
You will need money for lunch and dinner each day, non-scheduled sightseeing, and souvenirs.

How will I get to Amsterdam? What if I want to travel after the program ends?
Students make their own flight arrangements to and from Amsterdam, but are welcome to travel on the same flights as the course directors. Students wishing to travel afterwards are able to make whatever plans they wish following the end of the program.

Where will I stay in Amsterdam?
For ten years we have stayed at the Hotel Residence Le Coin, centrally located and just around the corner from UvA. It’s a boutique hotel, not a dorm. For pictures and more information go to http://www.lecoin.nl.

Will there be computer access in Amsterdam?
You will have access to the computer labs at the University of Amsterdam and wireless or ethernet access in the Hotel Le Coin.

How will I get to Paris?
We will travel as a group to Paris and the cost of that travel is built into the student fee.

Where will I stay in Paris?
Our accommodation in Paris is being arranged by the American University of Paris, which is located in the 7th arrondissement, just east of the Eiffel Tower.
