2008 Study Abroad Handbook
Preparing to Study Abroad
Step 1 - Get Informed
First, download and read the entire general section of this Student Handbook and the site-specific information related to your program. (Password protected, NYU NetID and Password required).
Next, attend the required orientation at NYU before departure. There you will learn important details about health and safety, housing, activities, and course content. Take time to learn about the history, politics, economy, and culture where you will study before you leave. Travel guides, local newspapers online, and academic articles provide important information which will help you have a richer experience as you will then arrive with some knowledge. If you have any questions, please contact your faculty director or the Office of Academic Initiatives and Global Programs.
Step 2 - Registration by Enrollment Form
All accepted students will receive an Enrollment Form, which must be completed in order to start the registration process. Please note, Summer Study Abroad students CANNOT register using Albert or TorchTone.
Step 3 - Housing and Activity Forms and Payment
In addition to the Enrollment Form, you must also submit the following to the Office of Academic Initiatives and Global Programs by the deadline listed on the form:
- Travel Release Form
- Housing and Activity Form and Fees
- Health History Form
While you pay fees for your housing and program activities to the Office of Academic Initiatives and Global Programs, you will pay tuition directly to the Bursar. Students will receive a bill that reflects the number of credits listed on your Enrollment Form. The Bursar (located at 25 W. 4th Street) will bill the student directly. Please direct all questions regarding tuition to the Bursar's Office.
Financial Aid
Those students who are currently receiving Federal Financial Aid may apply for Summer Aid using the NYU Office of Financial Aid. For more information go to www.nyu.edu/financial.aid. Newly matriculated NYU students may be able to receive financial assistance during the summer if eligible for financial aid. Please file a FAFSA and contact the NYU Office of Financial Aid. Non-NYU students, as per federal regulations, are not eligible for financial aid through NYU. However, non-NYU students should contact the financial aid office at their home university to find out if they are eligible for financial aid.
The Office of Academic Initiatives and Global Programs offers a limited number of need-based scholarships for summer study abroad students. Awards are about $1,000. You will receive additional information about this by email and at the required predeparture orientation.
Step 4 - Travel
Make all necessary travel arrangements. Please see the Travel Information section. The first day is the arrival day of the Program. There will be a required orientation meeting prior to the first day of class.
