Erich Dietrich

As Assistant Dean for Global and Academic Affairs, Erich Dietrich works with the Dean and Vice Dean in supporting NYU Steinhardt's academic mission. Dietrich collaborates closely with other deans, department chairs, program directors and faculty in developing and assessing Steinhardt's graduate and undergraduate programs, both abroad and on the Washington Square Campus. He sits on various Steinhardt academic committees, including the Faculty Academic Affairs Committee, the Undergraduate Affairs Committee and the Committee on Courses and Programs.

Dietrich oversees Steinhardt's global academic integration, acting as the primary liaison to NYU-Shanghai, NYU-Abu Dhabi, the Office of the Vice Provost for Globalization, the global offices of other schools of NYU, and international universities with whom we collaborate. He also coordinates Steinhardt's outreach with community partnerships and field-based education sites.

Dean Dietrich is an historian whose specialization is race and higher education. He teaches an annual study abroad course, "Global Perspectives in Higher Education: Race and Higher Education in Brazil," and has taught 20th Century African-American History, US History since 1865, and Culture Wars in America.  In addition to his research and teaching, he has published op-ed newspaper articles and has been an invited guest commentator on BBC Radio.

Dietrich earned his B.A., magna cum laude, at Carleton College, his M.A. at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and his Ph.D. at New York University.
