London, England: Broadening Horizons in Speech and Language
In keeping with the most recent initiative of the American Speech Language and Hearing Association to increase international awareness and collaboration, we are introducing our new undergraduate study abroad program in London. The Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology offers students an opportunity to engage in the increasingly international field of speech and language pathology by providing experience in British and American schools overseas. In a world of global communication, speech and language pathologists are required to work with multicultural and multilingual populations. London is a truly multicultural city with most of the world's languages represented. Issues related to bilingualism are important when working with a population with speech and language disorders. In addition, differences in American and British English pronunciation and usage provide a striking example of dialectal differences for students of speech and language.
Students in this course benefit from input provided by guest lecturers from University College of London in the areas of articulation and reading disorders. Students gain an understanding of different theoretical perspectives and differences pertaining to language and dialect that may have an impact on assessment and intervention with children with articulation disorders and/or reading disorders.
