Student Speaker Applications Due February 22, 2011

One graduating senior and one graduating graduate student will be selected to speak on behalf of his/her class.

If you would like to be considered for this special honor, please plan to submit the text of a graduation speech no later than Tuesday, February 22nd at 5:00pm. The speech may be serious, humorous, personal or more general, but it may be no more than 3 minutes long. Arch Award Applications Due February 18, 2011

The Arch Award is presented to both an undergraduate and a graduate student in recognition of the unique and beneficial quality of their cumulative record of service to classmates, the faculty, and the administration of NYU Steinhardt.

Outstanding undergraduate and graduate students in NYUSteinhardt are invited to apply for the Dean’s Grants for Student Research 2011. Undergraduate may be awarded up to $500 to explore an idea under the supervision of a faculty member.

Graduate students may be awarded up or to $1000 to also explore a faculty-sponsored independent research project of a specific component of their thesis or dissertation work, e.g. instrument development/validation or a pilot study.

MLK Week Conversations of Color

Please join us for the NYU MLK Week Conversations of Color on Thursday, February 10th, 12:30-1:45 pm in the Pless Hall 3rd floor lounge, 82 Washington Square East.  The goal of Conversations of Color is to provide a forum for students, faculty and administrators to meet and talk about issues of diversity.  

This month our topic will be “The Politics of Hair: How Hair Affects Identity.” Through conversation and a panel discussion we will dive into how hair impacts experiences related to racial and ethnic communities, beauty and professionalism.

Lunch will be provided.

President’s Service Awards Nominations Now Open

The Division of Student Affairs is calling for nominations for  the 2011 President’s Service Awards. 

The purpose of the President’s Service Award is to recognize the distinguished achievements of undergraduate, graduate, and professional students and student organizations for their promotion of learning, leadership, and quality of student life at New York University.

Any NYU student, faculty, or staff member may nominate an NYU student for a President’s Service Award.  The deadline for applications is midnight on Friday, February 18, 2011.

First Fridays Doctoral Research Colloquium — Reminder

Steinhardt’s February First Fridays Doctoral Research Colloquium is scheduled for Friday, February 4th from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the 3rd Floor Pless Hall Lounge. This Friday’s meeting will feature Professor C. Cybele Raver from the Department of Applied Psychology along with doctoral student Dana Charles.

Professor Raver’s research focuses on young children and families facing economic hardship. She examines the mechanisms that support children’s positive outcomes in the policy contexts of welfare reform and early intervention.
