‘Ciudad De Los Reyes,’ a new album by Gabriel Alegría, music assistant professor of jazz, and his Afro-Peruvian Sextet, was released to critical acclaim in February. Alegría, who describes his sound as one that combines the common African roots found in American jazz music and Afro-Peruvian music from the coast of Peru, is among the most influential musicians in Peru’s jazz scene. The New York Times praised ‘Ciudad De Los Reyes,’ for it’s natural feel and intuitive, spring-like lyricism.
Alegría received a 2012 NYU Steinhardt Faculty Challenge Grant to support the creation, premiere, and recording of the album.
