Steinhardt in the News: An America Reads Tutor and Her Student Get Some Oklahoma City Thunder

Caitlin Clements, who works as a tutor for NYU America Reads in PS 256, The Benjamin Banneker School in Brooklyn, found a novel way to show her students the power of the written word.

One day she noticed that one of her first grade students, Antoine Fonviille, had written about Kevin Durant, the star player of the basketball team, Oklahoma City Thunder.

Clements, who happens to hail from Oklahoma City, suggested to that her student write a letter to the team.

A short time after his letter was mailed, a box arrived for Fonville containing an assortment of Kevin Durant/Thunder swag, including a Durant jersey in a youth size, and a personal note from the team’s administrative officer.
