Teacher Effectiveness is Topic of Steinhardt’s Policy Breakfast

Research findings on teacher effectiveness were discussed at Steinhardt’s February 24th Education Policy Breakfast.

Mary Diez, dean and professor of education at Alverno College and Andrew Porter, dean and George and Diane Weiss Professor of Education at the Graduate School of Education, the University of Pennsylvania, were guest speakers.

Diez and Porter presented research that addressed the question:  How do we develop teacher quality and effectiveness?

Diez shared a PowerPoint presentation titled, ‘Developing Teacher Quality and Effectiveness in New Teachers.’

Porter shared findings from The National Research Council’s report, ‘Preparing Evidence for Sound Policy.’

Mary Brabeck, Gale and Ira Drukier Dean at NYU Steinhardt, noted that government support for educational research that can ultimately affect student academic outcomes is lacking.

“Less than one percent of funding for education goes to research.  In health, the amount of government funding allocated for research is closer to 25 percent,” she said.

Robert Tobias, clinical professor in Steinhardt’s Department of Teaching and Learning, served as moderator of the event.
