Marion Nestle on the Truth about Cat and Dog Food

“The pet food industry serves an important ecological function by using up food that would otherwise be thrown out,” Steinhardt Professor Marion Nestle told New York Times reporter Jane Brody in a recent Personal Health column. “If everyone cooked human food for the 472 million cats and dogs in America, it would be like feeding an additional 42 million people.”

Nestle’s recent book is Feed Your Pet Right: The Authoritative Guide to Feeding Your Dog and Cat (Free Press, 2010). She is the Paulette Goddard professor in Steinhardt’s Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health, and the author of seven books including Food Politics (University of California Press, 2002) and What to Eat (North Point Press, 2006).
