Augusta Kappner is Senior Fellow of the Steinhardt Institute for Higher Education Policy. She has spent three decades in senior administrative roles in New York City colleges and universities and has served on more than a dozen education-related councils, commissions, and advisory groups for New York City and New York State. Most recently president of Bank Street College (1995-2008), Kappner has also served as Assistant Secretary for Vocational and Adult Education at the U.S. Department of Education (1993-1995), president of the Borough of Manhattan Community College (1986-1992), University Dean for Academic Affairs at the City University of New York (1984-1986), and Dean of Continuing Education at LaGuardia Community College (1978-1984). She holds a D.S.W from Columbia University, and honorary doctorates from Hunter College and Trinity College. At the Steinhardt Institute, Kappner' work will focus on questions of program and policy around the high school to college transition.
