ASA Book of the Year in the Sociology of Education
Mitchell Stevens has been awarded the 2009 Pierre Bourdieu Award from the Education Section of the American Sociological Association for his book,
Creating a Class: College Admissions and the Education of Elites. The book is an ethnography that explores the inner workings of an admissions office at a small, liberal arts college and decontructs contemporary notions of merit, selection, and holistic review in highly selective college admissions.
The Pierre Bourdieu Award is given for the best book in the Sociology of Education. Stevens is currently associate professor of education at Stanford University and a faculty affiliate of the Steinhardt Institute. He is the author of
Kingdom of Children: Culture and Controversy in the Homeschooling Movement.
