Mala Singh
Mala Singh is a South African Fulbright Scholar based at the New School for Social Research and the Steinhardt Institute for Higher Education Policy, NYU. She is currently Professor of International Higher Education Policy in the Centre for Higher Education Research and Information at the Open University in the UK. She was the founding Executive Director of the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC) of the Council on Higher Education in South Africa. She has a doctorate in Philosophy and was formerly professor and head of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Durban-Westville in South Africa. She has published in the fields of philosophy, higher education and quality assurance. She is a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa. Dr Singh has served as a board member of the International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE) and was Vice Chairperson of the UNESCO-OECD initiative to develop Guidelines for Quality Provision in Cross-border Higher Education. She serves on the editorial boards of Higher Education Policy, the South African Journal of Higher Education and the Journal of Higher Education in Africa. She has been an instructor on quality assurance courses for international participants in higher education run by UNESCO and the Association of African Universities (AAU). She serves on the Advisory Committee of the AAU's Project on Quality Assurance in African Higher Education, is a member of the European Register Committee, and the University Quality Assurance International Board in Dubai.
Her Fulbright research project is titled, "Can social justice and social transformation issues be considered as a constituent part of conceptions of quality and systems of quality evaluation in high education: An assessment of the South African system."
