Although he has long been regarded as one of the world's leading exponents of the music of Frédéric Chopin, Mr. Ohlsson commands an enormous repertoire, which ranges over the entire piano literature. A student of Sascha Gorodnitzki and Claudio Arrau, Mr. Ohlsson has come to be noted for his masterly performances of the works of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, as well as the Romantic repertoire. His concerto repertoire alone is unusually wide and eclectic - ranging from Haydn and Mozart to works of the 21st century - and to date he has at his command some 80 concertos."

To see video of master class click here.

Courses to Begin Fall 2008

American Ballet Theatre and New York University have entered into a partnership to offer the first ever Master of Arts in Dance Education with a concentration in Ballet Pedagogy. This ground-breaking degree is offered through the Dance Education Program at the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development through its Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions. The new program can be completed in three semesters of full-time study. The program will welcome its first class in fall 2008.

The NYU/ABT collaboration is a 36-point master's degree program that prepares dance teachers for studios, conservatories, and company schools, as well as for further doctoral study in dance education and teaching in higher education. Students in the program will examine the study of ballet technique for the express purpose of developing research-informed and proficient teachers who possess a complete understanding of the use of the biomechanics of movement, artistic imagery, and the development of students on professional and recreational tracks of study. Integrated fieldwork studies will give students the opportunity to cultivate professional networks in the dance capital of the world, while visiting exemplary artistic, teaching, and learning venues in New York City.

Unique courses in the curriculum include Methods & Materials for Teaching Dance, Teaching Performance and Composition, Ballet Fieldwork and Analysis, Creative Movement for the Studio School, Dancing Jazz through History, Dance Education Research, Principles and Processes of Dance Administration, and Teaching Apprenticeship. Students can also select from a diverse selection of courses such as African Dance, Dance for the Special Child, and Hip-Hop. Culminating projects for the degree include the development of a unique syllabus with a related research project and business plan tailored to individual teaching contexts.

ABT faculty for the NYU Master's degree program include Franco De Vita, principal of the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at American Ballet Theatre, Kirk Peterson, artistic director of the ABT Studio Company, and Raymond Lukens, a faculty member at ABT's JKO School. NYU Steinhardt Dance Education faculty includes Dr. Susan Koff, director of the dance education program, and Barbara Bashaw, associate director.

"This academic partnership between NYU Steinhardt and American Ballet Theatre is unique in the world of higher education," said Mary Brabeck, dean of the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. "It is just one example of the kinds of partnerships Steinhardt is forging with cultural and educational organizations throughout New York City. This new curriculum, drawing on the expertise and talent of both ABT and NYU Dance Education faculty, will provide a wealth of learning opportunities for our students."

"We are delighted to be partnering with NYU on such an extraordinary program," said Rachel Moore, executive director of American Ballet Theatre. "The opportunity to marry excellence in academics with excellence in dance pedagogy is thrilling. Through this program ABT and NYU will be working together to raise the quality of dance training across America. I believe this will be a tremendous step forward for the dance field and will benefit many young artists nationally."

Applications for the NYU/ABT Master's degree program are available through the NYU Steinhardt Office of Graduate Admissions at http://steinhardt.nyu.edu/graduate_admissions/.

Dr. Lawrence Ferrara, Director of Steinhardt Music and Performing Arts Programs, led a spirited and often humorous interview of Jazz legend Jimmy Heath and his son, acclaimed composer, producer, and performer Mtume at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts.

Jimmy Heath, Mtume and Dr. Ferrara seemed to have as much fun as the audience. The topics of discussion ranged from Jimmy Heath and Mtume having played with the great jazz legends of the last fifty years to hip hop to a discussion of the creative process which includes growth stages which Mtume termed "imitation," "emulation," and "innovation." Both guests spoke about the nature of the music business as a performer, composer and producer. "Innovation" took center stage in the lively discussion when a student questioned the panel on when a young performer is actually ready to begin "innovating." Jimmy Heath's answer: "Whenever you feel ready." The packed theatre was comprised of undergraduate music majors.

A jazz percussionist during his twenties with Miles Davis' band, Mtume moved into urban contemporary and funk in the late '70s and became one of the more successful producers and performers in both styles during the '80s. The son of the great jazz saxophonist Jimmy Heath and nephew of the other Heath brothers, in addition to recording and performing with Miles Davis, Mtume is featured on albums by the Heath Brothers, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, and Freddie Hubbard. He recorded as a bandleader for Strata-East before turning to funk in the late '70s. Mtume's band included the sassy, sultry vocalist Tawatha Agee, keyboardist Phil Fields, and bassist Ray Johnson. They had a number one R&B hit with "Juicy Fruit" in 1983 and a number two single in 1984 with "You, Me and He." Another Top Ten hit was "Breathless" in 1986. Mtume also teamed with another ex-jazz musician, Reggie Lucas, who had also been in Davis' '70s band. They produced and/or wrote for such artists as Stephanie Mills, Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway, Phyllis Hyman, Gary Bartz, Sadane, Lou Rawls, Rena Scott, and Eddie Henderson in the late '70s.

The middle of the three Heath Brothers, Jimmy Heath has a distinctive sound on tenor, is a fluid player on soprano and flute, and one of the great big band arranger/composers whose original compositions include "C.T.A." and "Gingerbread Boy." He was originally an altoist, playing with Howard McGhee during 1947-1948 and the Dizzy Gillespie big band (1949-1950). Called "Little Bird" because of the similarity in his playing to Charlie Parker, Heath switched to tenor in the early '50s. In 1959, he replaced John Coltrane in the Miles Davis band, in addition to playing with Kenny Dorham and Gil Evans, and started a string of impressive recordings for Riverside. In the 1960s, Heath frequently teamed up with Milt Jackson and Art Farmer. From 1975-1982, Jimmy Heath teamed up with brothers Percy and Tootie in the Heath Brothers, and since then has remained active as a saxophonist and writer. In addition to his earlier Riverside dates, Jimmy Heath has recorded as a leader for Cobblestone, Muse, Xanadu, Landmark, and Verve and appears on more than 100 albums and has had more than 100 compositions recorded.

 Related Link: http://steinhardt.nyu.edu/music/

Odin, the opera, produced by Steinhardt's Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions, received praise in an opera review in the April 17th issue of the New York Times.

Directed by John Simpkins, with musical direction by Jonathan Haas, Odin was conducted by the NYU Percussion Ensemble, and overseen by composer Donald Knaack. The opera was highly regarded by the New York Times for the work of undergraduate and graduate students in the department.

Excerpts from the review:

For “Odin: The Opera,” a work in progress that had its premiere in a semi-staged concert version at the Frederick Loewe Theater of New York University on Friday night, he (Knack) used another found resource: the energy and talent of the university’s mainly undergraduate vocal students and mainly graduate-student percussionists. Their raw energy coursed through the piece and helped infuse it with far more vitality than it might have manifested without them.”
The appeal of the whole thing lay mainly in its youthful energy and striking instrumentation. (The N.Y.U. Percussion Ensemble, under Jonathan Haas, was impressive.)

http://www.nytimes.com

Contact Information

Jennifer Zwiebel
Phone: 212-998-6797
jennifer.zwiebel@nyu.edu

Director and co-conceiver Harold Prince, composer & lyricist Jason Robert Brown and book writer Alfred Uhry, who created the Broadway production of Parade, visited NYU Steinhardt to speak with our Music Theatre Programs' production cast. Mr. Prince viewed a video of the Steinhardt Music Theatre production and was so moved he generously asked to meet with the cast. A lively discussion ensued that described the creation of the original production of Parade at The Vivian Beaumont Theatre at Lincoln Center in 1998-1999 and that included effusive praise for the NYU Steinhardt production. Uhry – a Tony, Oscar, and Pulitzer prizewinning author – shared personal family stories about growing up in the presence of the Frank family, around whom the show is based. The hour-long conversation in the Provincetown Playhouse also explored the current state of the Broadway musical and contemporary trends as they apply to young actors.

Mr. Prince –who holds over twenty Tony Awards -- gave striking and detailed accolades about the Steinhardt production, which was under the direction of John Simpkins. He surprised and delighted all in attendance by announcing that he sent the production video to Lincoln Center’s Theatre on Film and Tape archive (TOFT) to be stored with the Broadway production. “Now,” Prince told the audience, “…when people want to view a production of Parade they can choose the Lincoln Center production or the recent production at NYU!”
