Developing K-12 Chinese Language Teachers

Project Summary

This multi-level collaborative program entitled Developing Chinese Language Teachers (Project DLCT) would expand NYU's existing Program in Foreign Language Education in Chinese in order to meet the dramatically increasing need for Chinese language teachers in American schools. Specifically, the program will: l) recruit students in the United States to earn NYU master's degrees and NY state certification in Chinese language education; 2) bring qualified students from China to earn NYU master's degrees and NY State teacher certification and to subsequently teach in American schools, 3) create a virtual Teacher Training Center for pre- and post-service teachers of Chinese, and 4) conduct an evaluation study of the effectiveness of the Chinese teacher education program and its graduates who teach in American schools. We anticipate that by summer 2010 we will have developed an initial cadre of 30 to 40 certified teachers of Chinese who will teach in American schools and that we will have established a global, online professional resource network.
