Promoting One's Findings
Press Releases
A press release is one communication tool utilized by the NYU Public Affairs Office to inform journalists of events, research, and critical issues explored by faculty experts. It is an ideal vehicle for disseminating interesting discoveries from research, studies that reveal new trends, and other scholarly projects to general audiences. Written in an explanatory journalistic style that is accessible to an uninformed reader, a release summarizes key findings and demonstrates the relevance of faculty work on specific populations and/or the public at large.
Expert Tip Sheets
An expert tip sheet is another method of communicating with reporters. A tip sheet is used to alert beat reporters to significant impending events, such as various court actions, New York State legislative votes on school and health issues, Food and Drug Administration reports, or Congressional debate on the National Endowment for the Arts. A tip sheet notifies journalists that scholarly experts are available for interviews to analyze proceedings, explain the impact of actions and rulings or provide other authoritative interpretations.
Opinion-Editorial
Written primarily for sections in publications known as the Opinion-Editorial pages, an Op-Ed, the abbreviated handle, is commentary written by intellectual observers that presents knowledgeable viewpoints on an event, issue, or the latest controversy being addressed in the news or by members of the community. Op-Eds must be timely and respond to the conversation of the day. Most print publications, general media as well as professional journals, encourage scholars to provide opinions on their areas of authority.
Letters to the Editor
Letters to the Editor are a direct response to a publication’s coverage of an issue. Generally, letters are published if writers have an alternative viewpoint, can clarify or better explain information, directly challenge contents of a story or cite glaring omission of important data or theories.
