Preparing for Life in Puebla
Think about what you want to get from the experience
Ask yourself, what do you want to gain from your time away? We're not suggesting that you need to write out a day-by-day plan, just encouraging you to take stock of what's important to you, then seriously consider ways to make sure those things happen. In addition to the academic experience, consider whether you want to make friends or professional contacts locally, site-see, travel to nearby regions, taste local cuisine, improve your Spanish-language skills, become involved in campus or community activities, or more.
Make a budget before you leave and stick to it
Though living expenses in Mexico are much cheaper than the US, study abroad can become expensive, especially if you travel a lot during breaks and on weekends. Here's a simple plan for preparing financially for your trip:
- Determine your budget. You may not be able to work abroad, whether because of legal, time, or other restrictions. So, ensure you have enough funds to cover your expenses.
- Think carefully about what you plan to do while you're away. How much do you plan to travel? How do you plan to get there? Where do you plan to stay? Are you comfortable staying in hostels? Also consider everyday expenses, like food, toiletries, etc. - they can add up quickly.
- Be realistic. You're going to be very tempted to spend lots of money during your first few weeks abroad-you may make new friends and want to go out a lot, especially at the beginning. If possible, allow for "splurges" when you consider your budget.
- Try to break down your budget by week or month, then make a promise to yourself that you'll stick to it. One way to make sure you do is to keep track of how you spend your money once you get there. It can be easy to forget where it all goes, but if you write it down, you'll find places here and there where you may be able to save.
Ensure your responsibilities at home and school are covered
Since you will be away for a semester, consider your current obligations. If you live off-campus, have you arranged for someone to sublease your room? Have you considered your utilities? Have you consulted your academic advisor to ensure your graduation requirements are still being met within your intended time frame? You will enjoy your study abroad experience much more if you take care of these details before you go.
Make preparations for your health before you leave
Any physical or mental health concerns that you have here in the United States will still be with you when you're abroad. Consult with your health care providers about things like prescriptions, medical treatment, and counseling abroad.
Research the program and city before you go
You're always welcome to call us with any questions you have, but you should definitely read books and websites about your new home before embarking on your study abroad experience. We also recommend that you visit the Universidad Popular Autónoma del Estado de Puebla site for information about the city of Puebla.
Pack appropriately
It is recommended that you pack light clothes such as thin shirts and pants, cotton t-shirts, shorts, and other comfortable and refreshing clothing. In addition, it is suggested that for the evenings, you should bring shirts with long sleeves, pants, and a light jacket in case that it rains. Sunglasses are a must!
