Study in Puebla Mexico

In Fall 2008, NYU Steinhardt is offering undergraduates in Media, Culture and Communication a semester study abroad exchange option in Puebla, Mexico.

Puebla BienvenidosThrough an innovative partnership with Universidad Popular Autónoma del Estado de Puebla (UPAEP), ranked nationally in the Top 5 Private universities in Mexico, Steinhardt students can spend a semester learning Spanish and taking courses in media and communication studies.

The program is limited to students in the Media, Culture and Communication program.

Academics--UPDATED

Students earn 16 credits at UPAEP that will be allocated into their NYU Program of Study, by advisement. Courses will be taught in sequence over the semester, as follows (please see calendar for complete information).

Spanish Language Immersion focusing on language and cultural immersion. August 4 - Sept 5, 2008. (Students fluent in written and spoken Spanish will select a course by advisement from UPAEP course options. Please see program calendar page for details.)

Media and Politics in Mexico, September 9-26

Course reviews the history of the relationship between the media and politics in Mexico, with special emphasis on analysis of the role of the media as an agent of political rule and political change since Independence and an examination of the legal and regulatory frameworks for the media in Mexico. This course will also examine the uses of media in everyday life. Puebla Campus 2

Telenovelas, Television and Radio in Mexico, October 7-31

Course situates a study of the Telenovela in the broader landscape of television and radio in Mexico. Topics will include the formal, textual characteristics of the genre, classic themes and narrative devices, the reception of Telenovelas by audiences, and the economics of their production and distribution. Course includes a practice-based radio and television production component.

Advertising, Cinema and New Media in Mexico, November 4-December 5

Course examines the sociology and history of advertising and cinema in Mexico, with attention to new developments in digital media. Topics include an analysis of advertising and its markets over time; major agencies and advertisers; political advertising; legal and regulatory frameworks in Mexico; the political economy of new media in a global context.

Courses will be taught in a bilingual Spanish-English format and will allow MCC students to work together with UPAEP students on collaborative, context-based language learning. Classroom discussion will be conducted primarily in Spanish, with course readings in Spanish and English. Students may submit written assignments in English or Spanish.
