Graduate Student Spotlights

Peter Schwebs

Music and Performing Arts

Why I chose this graduate program:
teachers, master classes, cooperation of NYU with famous Jazz Clubs, e.g. Blue Note
When I hear the word "genius," I think of:
Johann Sebastian Bach, Albert Einstein and Herbie Hancock
A nightmare I've had about school:
getting locked in the bass-locker while having a nap
Why I went back to graduate school:
to continue my jazz studies, to improve my musical skills, to gain the experience of studying and living in a foreign country and to get to know new people
The best job I've ever had:
freelance musician
A hobby I have nobody knows about:
detangling my hair under the shower
The professor who influenced me the most:
George Garzone (Jazz Improvisation Technique)
My favorite place to study around NYU:
Think Coffee (Mercer St. betw. W3rd and W4th St.)
Community service I am most proud of:
alternative national service/civilian service (1999-2000 in Germany): caring for old people, e.g. shopping, going for a walk or just talking
My secret (academic) passion:
doing food research the many different restaurants around NYU
If I could take a year off, I would:
play music, travel and hang out with some friends
I would like to be remembered for:
enjoying life, being optimistic, open-minded, adventurous, reliable, honest, grateful and most important, being happy with who I am.
After I graduate, I:
will continue reaching my goal to find personal ways of expression in music on my instrument and in my own compositions, and to communicate through the language of music with other people.
