Graduate Student Spotlights

Alexander Bornstein

Music Composition for Film and Multimedia

Briefly tell us why you chose your program:
The music composition program at NYU Steinhardt's Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions strives to balance both the theory and practice of composing music. It promised to be a place where I could work with world-class faculty, learn a varied and eclectic skill set, and receive an education offered nowhere else. The opportunity to study here was extremely enticing, as was having the chance to live in New York City and experience its incomparable culture scene.
A book I would never sell:
The Time Machine
My inspiration is:
Day to day it is my family, but as an artist it is most likely Jazz pianist Bill Evans and his philosophies towards studying music
Something I collect:
Film soundtracks and Jazz recordings
Why I went to Graduate School:
To find my voice as a composer/artist
The best gift I've ever received:
Since moving to NY, it would be my pair of snow boots
The longest paper I've ever written:
A film score analysis of "Back to the Future": almost got to 10,000 words
The professor who influenced me the most:
My very first composition teacher Stella Sung
My favorite coffee:
Any blend with chicory
If I could take a year off I would:
Play small gigs in a Jazz combo and/or traveling to Europe and Asia
My secret passion is:
The Simpsons
The best invention ever is:
Printing press, or the modern piano
