
Francisco X. Gaytán is in his fifth year of doctoral studies in psychological development at NYU. He has been working with Professor Carola Suárez-Orozco looking at the psychosocial and academic adaptation of immigrant youth. In addition to his previous work in the social services in Chicago and the San Francisco Bay Area, Frank has worked as an afterschool educator, tutor, mentor, and high school teacher in Latino communities in Boston and New York. Originally from Chicago, he completed his bachelor's degree in psychology at Loyola University Chicago. He has a master’s degree in social work from the University of California at Berkeley and a master’s degree in education from Harvard University. Frank is a 2007-2008 Spencer Foundation Dissertation Fellow. His research focuses on social capital and the cultural, academic, and psychological adaptation of the growing Mexican immigrant student population in New York City. He is the Coordinator of the Advocacy Coalition on the Status of Black and Latino Males at Steinhardt’s Metropolitan Center for Urban Education.
